Earlier Thursday, a discussion on Reddit went viral after gamers were introduced to a new prototype concept for a simple device that will turn your iPhone into a working Gameboy, titled the SmartBoy.
Independent video game hardware developer, Hyperkin, stated that he had planned for the device to be an April Fool’s joke, and his original idea quickly expanded into a full on project, set for consumer release.
Hyper kin’s product developer, Chris Gallizzi, stated in a recent Press Release:
“We wanted to create a retro device that can be easily adapted into any modern gamer’s arsenal of devices.”
The product is currently still in the very early stages of conceptual development and will release in one color variation modeled after the classic “80’s gray” appearance, with the possibility of more colors becoming available in the future.
The device will feature a start and select button, an eight-way D-pad, two action buttons, all replicating the original design of the original Nintendo Gameboy gray handheld system. The device will also come with a built-in battery that charges while connected to the phone itself.
Gameplay will be viewed through the iPhone 6 Plus or 6s Plus’ screen and will operate through a downloadable app, stated to be exclusive to the SmartBoy. In addition, it has been stated that upscaling, save points and a cheat-log will be included as well.
As the project is still nowhere near completion, the release for the product has not yet been stated. But, one thing’s for sure; this is one must-have device for any diehard Nintendo gamer.
