Finally, the news Star Wars fans have been waiting for is here. On Wednesday, during a Walt Disney earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger officially confirmed that a standalone Han Solo film is now slated to release in May 2018.
“This is the first of a set of planned stand-alone stories,” stated Iger while referencing Rogue One, which is set to release on December 16, 2016, in theaters nationwide. “We’re already in pre-production on our next one, for release in May 2018.”
After the devastating delay of Star Wars Episode VIII‘s release from May to December 2017, fans’ are cheerful in high hopes once again for the highly anticipated news that so many have been eagerly awaiting. In addition, Iger has confirmed that filming for the sequel has officially begun:
“There is no better way to propel this franchise into the future than by producing quality products,” he stated during the quarterly earnings call. “Filming of Star Wars: Episode VIII, the next chapter of the legendary saga has just commenced and it will be in theaters December 2017. And production of Episode IX, a 2019 release, has also begun.”
Iger also reported on Rogue One, which began filming in August and is nearing completion in production.
“Filming of Rogue One is virtually completed and we absolutely love what we’ve seen so far,” he stated. “This is the first of a set of planned stand-alone stories and we’re already in pre-production on our next one, for release in May of 2018.”
“The next one,” set for release in May 2018 references the standalone prequel film centered around the fan favorite smuggler of the Galaxy Far, Far Away, which will follow Solo in his events prior, and leading up to Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. After nearly two years of circulating rumors and speculations from fans’, the film was already suspected to be in preproduction, though Disney has kept very close ties on anything having to do with the film. As the franchise is already knee deep in casting for the highly anticipated anthology, a shortlist has been released which includes a multitude of up-and-coming actors from Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood, Logan Lerman, Emory Cohen, and Blake Jenner.
While fans’ prepare for the nearly two-year wait between Episode’s VIII and IX, which is set for release sometime in 2019, we can safely say that there will be no lack of new content coming from the Star Wars universe in the meantime.
Rogue One is set for release this Christmas, while Star Wars Episode VIII will hit theaters nationwide on December 15, 2017.
